It's hard to believe, but our spring season is right around the corner. Here are some upcoming important dates for our Spring 2012 Season:

March 12th--Online Registration Opens
April 16th--Registration closes (we will close earlier if full but maintain a waiting list)
April 26th--Coach/Manager Meeting
May 5th--Kick-Off Jamboree (7/8 League: 9:00 a.m.; 5/6 League: 10:30 a.m.)
Week of May 7th--Games Start
June 9th--Last Day of Games/Trophy Presentation

We will email families who played last fall and are in our registration system with a reminder when registration opens. Please pass along the information to other interested families. We will also post a registration link on this site.

Washburn Summer Soccer Camps

The Washburn Soccer Program has announced it's 2012 Summer Camp. This is a great opportunity for your child to increase their soccer skills and have lots of fun!

The camp runs from June 25th-28th, 9:00-11:00 a.m. at Pearl Park. It's for girls and boys entering K-5th grade. The cost is $70 before May 15th and $80 after that date. This is a great deal--the registration fee includes a new soccer ball and t-shirt. Camp staff include Washburn High School (WHS) Girls and Boys Varsity Coaches and Players. All proceeds benefit WHS soccer programs. Please contact Brian (see below) for the registration form and more information.

Fuller Soccer Festival Clinic--Hosted by Keliix Intra Soccer Club

Sunday, September 25th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Washburn Commons

Please join Keliix Intra Soccer Club for an afternoon of soccer and community for all the kids of the Fuller Soccer Program. The Festival will be run by the Keliix Coaching Director, David Lawson, and Keliix Assistant Coaching Director (and a Fuller coach) Sean Baker. Current Keliix players, many of whom starting playing soccer in the Fuller Program, will help with the Festival.

Registration for the FREE clinic is online through the Keliix Website (Keliix.com, under the "Register Now" tab. Registration is open to any Fuller Soccer player. Attend the boys' and girls' games, which run throughout the day. Fuller soccer kids will be doing scrimmages during some of the half-times. A fun day to come out and enjoy fall soccer at Washburn. (Regularly-scheduled Fuller games are on that day).

We appreciate all of you who have volunteered to coach or manage your child's team. We will be posting the day/time of the Coach/Manager meeting in the next day or so. We ask that either the coach or manager from each team come to the meeting to pick up the clipboard and hear any necessary information for the fall season. Fall 2011 Registration is Open!

Online registration for the Fall 2011 Season is now open. Registration will remain open until August 22nd or until full. Age on September 1st, 2011 determines eligibility and league assignment. We hope you will consider volunteering to coach or manage your child's team. It's not a big commitment and lots of fun (you'll be at the games anyway).

Remember: The Fall Jamboree is on Saturday, September 10th. The 7/8 League is at 9:00 a.m. and the 5/6 League is at 10:30 a.m. The Jamboree is held at Washburn Commons.

Fall 2011 Registration Coming Soon!

Fall registration will start in the next couple weeks. We are in the process of converting registration to an on-line system. We ask for your patience as we transition to a system that we hope will make things easier. Please check back for the exact date that registration will begin and for the link to registration. Your child's age on September 1st determines their eligibility to play Fuller Soccer this fall. Your child must be aged 5 by September 1st to play. Registration will be $25/player.

Important Dates to Remember:

Saturday, September 10th: Soccer Jamboree
Saturday, October 15th: End of Season

General Information:

5/6 League plays on Monday or Wednesday night (can vary by week) and on Saturdays

Summer Soccer Camp at Washburn!

Washburn High School is running a summer soccer camp for girls and boys aged 5-9 years. Look for registration materials at the Fuller Soccer Jamboree on Saturday, May 7th.

When: June 27-30
5 & 6 Year Olds @ 9:00-11:30 (limit 50 campers)
7-9 Year Olds @ 12:00-3:00 (limit 70 campers)

Where: Washburn High School Field
Cost: $70.00……Every participant will receive a new soccer ball & T-shirt!

Camp Staff includes Washburn High School (WHS) Boys & Girls Varsity Coaches and Assistant Coaches and current WHS soccer players. Low staff to camper ratio of 1:4. All Camp proceeds go to benefit the WHS boys and girls soccer programs. All registrations must be received with payment by June 1st. Please call after June 1st to check on space availability. No new registrations are being accepted at this time. A note can be sent to fullersoccer@gmail.com requesting being added to the mailing list. Be sure to include all the information requested on the registration form.

5/6 Teams are definitely full. Forms received after the deadline can not be guaranteed a team placement.

Rest assured, we are trying to place as many children as possible. We want to make the fewest number of calls to families informing them of the disappointing news.

7/8 Teams are still being formed.

Games & Bad Weather

Remember, the FSC Steering Committee does not cancel games due to inclement weather. It is up to the coaches of the teams that are scheduled to evaluate playing conditions and then come to a mutual decision on whether or not to play. If you have not heard from your team's coach or manager that the game has been canceled, then assume it is still on and dress/plan appropriately.

The Jamboree will be on Saturday May 1st,

Plan on two games a week (but not on Memorial Day weekend)

We are now working on setting up the teams, the schedules, and the materials in advance of the Coaches and Managers Meeting on Thursday, April 22nd. You should hear from your team's coach AFTER that meeting about team placement.

Fuller Soccer Rules

0 There are six (6) players on the field for each 5-6 year old team.

0 There are five (5) players on the field for each 7-8 year old team.

0 To start the game, all defensive players are on their side of the line and outside the circle.

0 The team kicking off may have players inside the circle. The ball should be passed forward. Once the ball has been kicked, all players may cross the center line or enter the circle. A goal can not be scored on the kickoff unless another player first touches the ball.

0 When one team kicks the ball out of bounds on either side of the field, the other team gets a throw-in. The player closest to the ball should be selected to throw the ball in at the point where it went out of bounds. The player holds the ball above and behind his/her head. Both feet should stay on the ground when throwing. Call "play on" if the ball touches the line. Call "throw in" when the ball completely crosses the line.

0 When the ball goes completely beyond the end line (goal line ):

If the defensive team touched the ball last, the ball is placed at the nearest comer for a comer kick. Players may line up in any position, but must be about 10 feet from the ball when it is kicked. A goal may be scored on a comer kick without being touched by another player (but at this age the ball should be passed first. )

lf the offensive team touched the ball last, the goalie gets a goal kick. The players on the opposing team all move behind the center line. The goalie's team may line up anywhere on the field. The ball is placed on the line of the goalie box and the goalie passes it to one of his/her team members or kicks it towards the other end. Once the goalie has kicked the ball, the other team can cross the center line.

0 A goal is scored when the ball completely crosses the goal line between the goal posts.

0 If a player unintentionally touches the ball with their hands or arms in an effort to protect his/her body, it is acceptable. However, if the player tries to stop the bail or redirect it with their hands or arms it is called a handball and the other team gets a free kick. The ball is placed at the point of the foul and if it is kicked into the goal it does not count unless it is first touched by another player .

0 The goalie can touch the ball with his/her hands while inside the goal box area. The goalie may leave the box, but may not touch the ball with his/her hands while outside the box.

0If a player is intentionally rough or mean, a free kick should be awarded and the game stopped. Sit down and talk with the players. This is a friendly game. If the rough play is unintentional, caution the playas the game continues.

0 If a player is hurt, stop the game. If one team is shooting let them continue momentarily but the coach should attend to the injured player.

0 Coaches also act as referees on the field. Please choose a side of the field and move up and down at the side of the field, trying not to run or stand in the middle of the field.

0 Whistles are neither required nor disallowed.

Coaches Duties

At the Jamboree

Meet your team and the parents.

We will rotate through a series of drills that will allow all the kids on your team to be exposed to most of the skills needed for the games.

At the Games

Come to the Jamboree and all games. Try to be at the game field 10 minutes before the game starts. Find a substitute if you can’t be there.

You will need to get the nets and balls if you are the first game at that field for the day (and return the balls and nets if you are the last game of the day).

Talk with your team’s manager about rotations. The Team Manager will have rotation charts and is responsible for having players ready to rotate in.

Games consist of eight 5-minute periods. The Managers keep track and will call “time.”

It usually works best (and makey you less tired) if you split the field with the other coaches. One with the forwards, one with the defense, one set of coaches on the left, one on the right.

The coaches are also the referees. Don't argue.

You will have many things to laugh about.

Games will be played in the rain unless it is a downpour and/or lightning (use your discretion). We will not be able to play at Fuller Park in the rain. Decisions to cancel games due to weather are made by the managers & coaches of each team together. Agree on a system with Manager to call team roster if a game is cancelled. The season is pretty short, so it would be nice to get in all the games. If you would like to schedule a make up game, Tom Kremer, 987.2452 to find out when a field is available.

Things to Teach the Kids

Good Sportsmanship – Win or lose, keep a positive attitude and have FUN! We do not keep standings and don't encourage score keeping.

Teamwork – Don't take the ball from kids in the same color uniform! This can be tough for the young ones.

Positioning – Forwards to the front, defenders to the back. You'll need to sort them out after each stoppage.

Basic Rules - Explain and reinforce the rules for goal keeping, throw-ins, kick-offs, corner kicks and goal kicks. If you need help with this yourself feel free to ask one of the more experienced coaches or go to some of the links in the Other Resources section.

Keep the Games Fun and Fair

Sometimes you will need to ensure that strong players on your team do not dominate the entire game. This may include moving someone back to defense, asking them to play in just half the field, or asking them to see how far they can pass the ball or help out their teammates in other ways.

You should set a good example by praising all players, regardless of what team they are on, when they make good plays or make good efforts.

Practices

It is considered a breach of etiquette to have any formal practices at this level of play.

Before the Jamboree

Call all families on your team by Tuesday, May 3rd if possible. Let them know your name, phone number, and team’s name as well as the time, date and place for the Jamboree (Saturday, May 7th at Washburn Commons: 9 am for 5-6 year old teams and 10:30 for 7-8 year old teams). Also let them know the date, time and place for the first two season games. Have players wear their team shirt to the Jamboree if they have it. Shirts will be passed out at the Jamboree to kids who need them. Please let families know that shin guards are required—they can be purchased inexpensively at Target, Play It Again Sports, etc

Bring beverage for you entire team to the Jamboree. (We no longer bring snacks.)

At the Jamboree

At the Jamboree, ask each family to sign up to bring drinks to one game during the season--enough for each of the players (and extras for player’s siblings) (Again, no snacks).

Hand out the final team schedule and roster to each family along with the “Dear Families” letter.

Have each family fill out the emergency contact list. Keep this list with your clipboard in the unlikely event it is ever needed.

At the Games

Come to the Jamboree and all games. Try to be at the game field 10 minutes before the game starts. Find a substitute if you can’t be there.

Talk with your team’s coaches to decide how your team wants to handle rotations. You will receive a packet with rotation chart. The Team Manager is responsible for having players ready to rotate in. Some coaches may prefer to handle rotations themselves by circulating positions. However you decide to do this, try to keep kids ready on the sidelines.

Keep time for the games. Games consist of eight 5-minute periods. If the ball is in play when time is up, let the kids play through and call time when the ball goes out of bounds.

Decisions to cancel games due to weather are made by the managers/coaches of each team together. Call team roster to cancel game in case of inclement weather. Games will be played in the rain unless it is a downpour and/or lightning (use your discretion). We will not be able to play at Fuller Park in the rain. The season is pretty short, so it would be nice to get in all the games. If you decide to cancel a game, try to contact all families on your team (enlist parents to help make the calls). Early-Season

All players will receive personalized medallions or trophies at the end of the season. Please check the roster with parents to insure that our database has correct spellings. E-mail Tom Kremer at tkremer@mn.rr.com by May 11 to let her know if your team has any spelling or player changes. If she doesn’t hear from you, we’ll assume your roster is correct

End of Season

At the end of the season please return clipboards, pencils, rotation charts and extra t-shirts to Charles Spolyar, 21 Rustic Lodge West (one block north of Ramsey Field)
